Exploring Iranian Lifestyle and Culture at Kashan’s Boutique Hotels: Part 2

My journey through Kashan’s boutique hotels has been incredible. After the delightful stays at Sayeh Saray and Sourijan, I find myself eagerly stepping into Saraye Ameriha, the crown jewel of boutique hotels in Kashan. Renowned as a national heritage of Iran, Saraye Ameriha lives up to its reputation in every aspect. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by an air of elegance and refinement that permeated every corner of the hotel.

The grandeur of Saraye Ameriha is immediately apparent. Its magnificent architecture stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of Iran. Every detail, from the ornate ceilings to the meticulously crafted patterns adorning the walls, exudes a sense of nobility and grace. As I wandered through the halls, I couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer beauty of it all.

Back to Qajar Era

This remarkable establishment boasts a rich history dating back over 300 years. Once the esteemed residence of Kashan’s famed governor, Saham-o-Saltaneh, it witnessed a golden age of prosperity. I was fascinated to learn from the friendly staff that Saham-o-Saltaneh played a pivotal role in safeguarding the Silk Road and the vast central desert of Iran.

The grandeur of Saraye Ameriha is evident in its architecture, which reflects the opulence of its illustrious past. I discovered that the hotel comprises two main mansions: one serving as the governor’s official meeting place and the other as a private residence for his family. Over time, additional buildings and courtyards were added by the governor’s descendants, expanding the complex to its current grandeur, including seven structures.

However, with the advent of Reza Shah Pahlavi’s era, the political landscape shifted, and the family’s influence waned. Eventually, the last of the governor’s heirs were forced to leave Iran, marking the end of an era for Saraye Ameriha. Despite the passage of time and the changes in ownership, the hotel showcases Kashan’s rich history and the legacy of those who once called it home.

As the years rolled by, decay and neglect took their toll on the once-majestic complex. Looters plunged into this structure and ruined a great deal of its grandeur to search for treasures and money. However, a ray of hope emerged when the government stepped in to renovate this historical gem. With an official declaration of its status as a national heritage site, the complex was spared from further degradation. It was then entrusted to the capable hands of one of Iran’s premier architectural organizations for a thorough renovation.

Exploring Hidden Gems at Saraye Ameriha Boutique Hotel

As the evening unfolded, a friendly staff member, skilled in communication, offered me a delightful tour of the premises. Leading me through the courtyards and grand halls, he also introduced me to the charming café in the basement. The ingenious design of wind towers by Iranian architects brought a refreshing breeze to this serene spot, adding to its allure.

In the midst of my fascination, my guide whispered with a smile, “I have a little surprise for you.”

Immersed in Iranian Traditions

Following our tour, we found ourselves in the courtyard amidst a lively gathering. People had congregated around two pots, one brewing cinnamon extract and the other crafting pomegranate paste. Yet, the true highlight was the tradition of making three wishes, intertwined with the process of creating cinnamon extract. Each participant stepped forward, sharing their heartfelt desires before stepping back. Experiencing this cherished aspect of Iranian culture fulfilled one of the key objectives of my three-day itinerary. The atmosphere was jovial and inclusive.

I vividly recall the wishes made by attendees: a young couple yearning for parenthood, a mother wishing success for her daughters, and further, hoping for a suitable match for her marriageable daughter. Witnessing the heartfelt aspirations of these individuals filled us with immense joy. Ultimately, we came together to relish the shared experience, sipping on cinnamon syrup as a symbol of camaraderie.

Reflecting on my time spent among Iranians, especially within the confines of these three boutique hotels, each memory etched itself into the fabric of my consciousness. From tales of historical significance to the intimate gatherings I participated in, every moment was a treasure trove of cultural richness. It’s safe to say that my friend’s prediction about the enjoyment of this journey was spot-on.
